The summary sounded great. Then you read the reviews.

You know the feeling. You find a hotel and an AI summary tells you it's lovely: friendly staff, great location, clean rooms. Then, a few pages into the actual reviews, you hit the thin walls, the broken air conditioning and the room you can't open a suitcase in.

That gap is the problem with any AI summary that looks for the most common theme. Tripadvisor's own description of its hotel summaries says they "compile popular themes and details from the reviews and opinions on Tripadvisor". Popular themes are useful. But when you're about to pay for a room, the complaint you need to see is often not the most popular one.

What Tripadvisor's AI summaries do well, and where they stop

To be fair, Tripadvisor built something real. Frequently reviewed hotels show "a brief summary of their attributes, powered by AI". Travellers can also see the specific reviews behind an attribute such as location and give feedback on any summary. If you plan your trips on Tripadvisor, that's a handy built-in.

There are limits, though:

CheckMyStay: the good, the bad and one honest verdict

CheckMyStay is a Chrome extension for Booking.com hotel pages. In its own words, it "reads every guest review on a Booking.com hotel page and hands you the good, the bad, and one honest verdict".

The key difference is the layout. Complaints aren't folded into an overall mood. What guests like and what guests complain about each get their own section, and a verdict stamp sits on top. You see the warning signs before you pay, not after you check in.

A real example: Hotel Pilime, Paris

We ran CheckMyStay on Hotel Pilime on Booking.com. Here's the public report:

CheckMyStay report for Hotel Pilime: verdict, what guests like and complain about
Screenshot of checkmystay.org/hotel/hotel-pilime-212724, taken 26 Oct 2026.

Verdict: MANY COMPLAINTS.

Guests like: the excellent location near the Metro and Montmartre, the friendly and helpful staff, and clean rooms with modern amenities.

Guests complain about: extremely small rooms and cramped elevators, inconsistent climate control and a noisy environment, and poor soundproofing between rooms and hallways.

Bottom line: "Hotel Pilime is a well-located, clean base for short stays, provided guests can manage the very limited space and potential noise issues."

That's the kind of answer you need. A summary that only praised the location would be accurate and still leave you lying awake at 2 a.m. listening to the hallway. For this report, we read 20 guest reviews, 10 positive and 10 negative, so the complaints carry as much weight as the praise.

We're upfront about our limits too. The report says it plainly: "AI summaries can be wrong โ€” check the reviews yourself." The original reviews are always one click away.

Head to head

  • Where it works: Tripadvisor's summaries appear on Tripadvisor (source). CheckMyStay works on Booking.com hotel pages, right where you book.
  • Which hotels: Tripadvisor covers hotels past a threshold number of English reviews. CheckMyStay works on any Booking.com hotel you open and click.
  • How complaints show up: Tripadvisor's summaries compile popular themes. CheckMyStay gives complaints their own section, separate from the praise.
  • Verdict: CheckMyStay stamps a single verdict on the hotel, such as MANY COMPLAINTS.
  • Shareable reports: every hotel checked with CheckMyStay gets a public report you can send to whoever you're travelling with.
  • Tracing claims back: Tripadvisor links attributes to the reviews behind them. CheckMyStay keeps the original Booking.com reviews one click away.

Who should pick which

If you research and book on Tripadvisor, its built-in summaries are a decent first look. If you book on Booking.com and want the bad news laid out next to the good before you pay, CheckMyStay is built for exactly that moment.

Try it before your next booking

According to our live site, the Free plan gives you 3 hotels every 30 days with full summaries and no card. New accounts also get a free first month with 30 hotels, once per account. Planning a bigger trip? The Trip Pass is $15, a one-time payment for 30 hotels over 30 days. It isn't a subscription, doesn't auto-renew and can be refunded within 14 days under our Refund Policy.

Your next hotel has complaints in its reviews somewhere. Read them before you book, not after you check in.
